Today I have the opportunity to walk on the field of the 2015 World Series Champion, the Kansas City Royals. 29 years ago was the last time someone could say that inside Kauffman Stadium. At the moment, the only thing harder to imagine for me is that today marks the fifth year I’ve been creating images at Kauffman stadium. I had to look that up and verify it for myself. In five years we’ve hosted the All-Star Game, one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history, the World Series, and have gone from the worst baseball team to hoisting the trophy. If you’re a KC Royals fan, I’m preaching to the choir. But the choir still appreciates it.
Last year, opening day was a celebration. It was a celebration because the Royals did the unthinkable. The Royal’s were contenders in the 2014 World Series and took the series to the bottom of the 9th in game 7, Alex Gordon makes a strike to left center field for a triple. Truly a moment that will stick with me for a lifetime. We celebrated that day that we came so close by hoisting the American League Championship trophy, celebrating our new flag and kicking off a new season which many of us hoped would be better than the last but non of us knew how much better it would be.
Since I’m a better story teller through visuals than I will ever be with words, I’ll let the images tell the rest of the story. It’s a wild one to say the least but I promise, it has a happy ending.
