A Colorado Springs Engagement | Arelys & DJ
Have we ever told you how much we love what we get to do for a “job?” Documenting people’s lives and stories as they change, grow, and evolve. Being a wedding photographer is simply the best. I’m pretty sure that neither Kyle nor myself had any idea what we were getting ourselves into when we started this adventure eight years ago, but I’m so glad we kept moving forward. It’s given us the opportunity to get to know and meet some pretty amazing people and see how their families have grown. Can I just say, how neat and humbling it is to be a “family” photographer? Way back in year one or two of shooting weddings we had the pleasure of shooting Josh and Vianney’s wedding. It was one of the very first weddings that we had ever done, and even the first engagement session that we did (crazy!). Their families were absolutely amazing, and we loved getting to know everyone so much! Fast forward a few years (okay maybe five), and we were asked to photograph Josh’s brother and sister-in-law’s wedding, David and Jessica. During Jessica and David’s reception, Vianney came up to us asking if we had October 8 of 2016 available, because her sister, Arelys was getting married. We were so excited!! October 8 is a very special day in our family – it’s Kyle’s birthday, and we couldn’t think of a better family to spend it with than one that we’ve watched grow and change over the years.
So, Arelys and DJ. These two have a kind of love like none other. They have three beautiful kids together, and every day is something new. A.A. Milne once said, “I knew when I met you an adventure was going to happen.” That is nothing but the truth for Arelys and DJ. We always tell our couples that if they want to do their engagement or bridal session photos someplace outside of Kansas City that we’re game, and they just need to let us know. Arelys and DJ definitely took us up on that offer! When we got together to start designing their engagement session, Arelys said something along the lines of ,”I know you just got back from Colorado, but would you be willing to go again?” Between both of them working full time jobs, three kids and all of the activities that come with them, and wedding planning, these two wanted an adventure of just their own! In all of the years that they’ve been together they had always wanted to visit Colorado together, but had just never gotten the chance to do so. During our first meeting when we mentioned that we were game for traveling, it sparked an idea. Arelys and DJ were going to take a few days off work, leave the kiddos with their family, and head to Colorado for an “engagementmoon” and their engagement photos.
We met them in Colorado Springs, and spent the day shooting in the Garden of the Gods, and then again in historic Colorado City that night underneath a blanket of big, fat snow flakes. Standing on the top of a mountain with them that afternoon as snow softly began to fall was just magical. It was so easy to see the love they have for one another. We’re so glad we get to be part of your family’s story, and capture your big adventure for you! We hope you enjoyed your time in Colorado, and we absolutely cannot wait for your wedding in October!!
