City Market Summer Engagement Session
Let’s be real for a minute, friends. When it comes to engagement session locations in Kansas City? There are so many dang options. Like, so many. And even for us pros that have been helping couples decide on picture locations for years it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. That’s one of the reasons we recommend mood boarding with your wedding photographer to find the just-right-for-you location. When it came to Jasmine and Brandon? A City Market summer engagement session wound up being absolutely just right for them. Why did City Market work so well for them? And why is it such a great engagement session location?

Lots of reasons, friends.
Why is City Market a good location?
For starters, there’s so much to do, so much variety, and so many opportunities. Especially since City Market spans multiple blocks. Of course you’ve got the traditional “City Market,” where there are actually markets and restaurants. Hit it at night and you’ve got lights in all of the alcoves. 🙂 And then there’s City Market over by the Arabia Steamboat Museum with a little bit more brick and architecture. We also love the block of City Market that’s just at the end of Walnut street outside of Planters. All of that brick and ironwork? Friends. It’s just gorgeous. AND you’ve got a nice, not-so-common view of the Kansas City skyline. Did we mention the park at City Market yet? Because that’s a hidden gem too.

But our favorite part of City Market for a summer engagement session?
Delaware Street. Hands down. With the bricked sidewalks, classic architecture and street lamps this is easily one of the most beautiful blocks in the whole city. And this, friends, is where we focused Jasmine and Brandon’s engagement session. Especially with their sweet pup Ellie in tow. It just perfectly fit the romantic-city-loving feeling these two wanted for their engagement session.

When should you take engagement photos in City Market?
Oh friends, this is easy. Because of all of the architecture and leading lines City Market looks good in any season, even winter. Okay, maybe especially winter with all of the twinkly lights on the stars. But the great thing about a City Market summer engagement session? All of the leaking lights and long shadows that really, truly help make an engagement session feel more romantic.
As far as what time of day to shoot in City Market? 2-2.5 hours before sunset. This gives you plenty of time to work within golden hour. But you’ll be able to finish early enough to not lose the light behind some of the taller buildings in the neighborhood.

Wedding Photographer Tip:
Just remember, friends. That as gorgeous of a photo location as City Market is? It’s also a living, working, breathing neighborhood. People live above the shops in the market. There are businesses that rely on foot traffic, and that foot traffic doesn’t stop for an engagement session, no matter who you are. Just be respectful, friends, as you enjoy this gorgeous part of KC.
