The 2016 Kansas City Royals Opening Day was truly a unique experience this year. They celebrated their World Series victory while showing off a lot of hard work completed during the off-season. This year I set a challenge for myself. Don’t think like a photographer, think like an artist. Recently I had the opportunity to listen to a photographer that I’ve idolized for years, Joel Grimes. Grimes spoke about his years as a young photographer trying to figure out this crazy world we call photography. One of his turning points was when we realized, he wasn’t just a photographer anymore. He wasn’t someone that clicked a button and created the same technically perfect photo every single time. He started to think in much broader strokes. Although he knew the technically right way of doing things, he began to expand and try things that may not have been acceptable at the moment. He pushed the boundaries of his thought process and began to think less like a photographer and more like an artist, creating images that were more art than just a photograph. This year, and in all the years to come, it’s my goal to stop thinking like a photographer that needs to get things “technically” correct and starting creating images that are strictly for me. In this gallery of images, you’ll notice some images that are technically not correct and probably could be refined, but these photos are my double exposures created right out of the camera. On several of the images I try to pair two completely different subjects or moments to tell a story that would complement each image. It’s the first step to thinking outside the dugout and we’ll see how it goes.
